History Founded in 1959, Silos Canarios is the result of a concession to the company, Productos y Transportes SA, granted four years earlier. Its initial capacity was six thousand tons of storage and an unloading performance of about a hundred tons. These were the years when the Servicio Nacional de Productos Agrarios (SENPA), attached to the Ministry of Agriculture, decided how cereals were to be distributed including both those for livestock feeds and for milling, for the preparation of flour for making bread and, in the Canary Islands, especially for gofio. In 2001, a new eight-thousand-ton silo was added, which brought the company close to its current thirty-thousand-ton capacity, which gives it a leading position in the Canaries as regards its logistical value. In 2000, the unloading process was modernised, going from an external piping system to an pneumatic unloader with a capacity of two hundred and eighty tons an hour, which can handle both grain and flour directly from the hold of the ships to the interior of the facility. In 1987, there was a significant change in ownership, with the entry of Compañía Canaria de Piensos S.A., (Capisa), together with a number of firms partly owned by it. The arrival of Capisa was very important for the future of Silos Canarios, because in the following years a great renewal of the facilities, capacities and objectives was undertaken. Thus, a total replacement of the electrical installation of the company took place, safety was increased to its highest level and the filling operation of the seventy-six storage cells available at that time was automated. The concession left open the possibility of a future increase in the capacity of the company, with the result that Silos Canarios, a few years later, in 1963, decided to increase its storage facilities up to 20,000 tons and to double its unloading capacity. This was possible thanks to the growing demand for livestock feeds and the need to have a stable stock on an island. Silos Canarios, in this way, is now an industry performing at full capacity, made up of trained staff who are proud of contributing not only to the maintenance of the business and productive structure of the Canary Islands but also of their collaborating role with the World Food Programme of the United Nations, which is a cause of great humanitarian value. Although it was created to serve as a logistical support in the port for manufacturers of feedstuffs and flour for bread its vocation of development and growth has now enabled it to supply cereals to Africa and to prepare itself for the new challenges of tomorrow.
Presentation Silos Canarios is a strategic company for the Islands. It has the largest cereal maritime reception, storage, processing and distribution plant anywhere in the Canary Islands. The firm, part of the Capisa Group, cooperates with the World Food Programme of the United Nations for Western Africa, sending each year tons of flour and grain in bags. The port terminal allows it to receive large ships and unload them and then - if their customer so requires - to send the goods on in smaller ships that are capable of operating at any African port. The Silos Canarios building is emblematic at Puerto de la Luz y de Las Palmas. Its unusual architecture and its dimensions make it visible from almost any point and it is often selected as the iconic image of the port of Gran Canaria. It contains silos with a total capacity of thirty thousand tons, which are filled by means of a system of automated piping, which transports cereals or flour from the holds of the ships through an pneumatic unloader with capacity for 280 tons an hour. The system is activated using pumps which push the product through the pipes in the facility, without exposing it to the elements at any time, with the result that a complete absence of environmental and acoustic contamination of the operation is guaranteed. The cereals and flour always go through a specialist machine unit to eliminate impurities with a complex system of filters which prevents any dust from reaching the exterior. The facility has a cereal refrigeration plant, with controlled temperatures in all cells, and an automated system for taking samples. Regarding bagging, Silos Canarios has five lines with a filling capacity of two thousand tons a day, as well as a highly-modern palleting system. A very common operation is the filling of containers with bags in sixty minutes per container. Together with the capacity to reload ships for export, the company has storage facilities for delivery on land for regional distribution to the food industry. Apart from the first pre-cleaning, Silos Canarios has specific machinery for separating all the impurities from the cereals, especially maize and oats due to the high demand for this service in the Canaries. All this capacity makes Silos Canarios a high-value leader for the Canarian industrial fabric, for its logistical capacity and the quality of its production and processes.
